CEFOTAXIME:50mg/kg taken orally every 8 hours
CEPHALEXIN: 10mg/kg taken orally every 6 hours
CHLORAMPHENICOL: 15mg/kg taken orally every 6 hours

KETOCONAZOLE: 5mg/kg taken orally every 12 hours for at least 12 days
NYSTATIN: 10,000u dose taken orally every 12 hours for at least 12 days.. may cause diarrhea as a side effect,

IMPORTANT NOTE: A typical lovebird weighs about 40 grams or 0.04 kg. To calculate the correct dose simply multiply the MG/KG dose by 0.04 to obtain the amount of dose required.

POX VIRUS IN AGAPORNIS (BULUTONG)

Transmission occurs usually by vectors (mosquitoes) and environmental contamination usually during summer. The virus is on the feathers, skin and feces. it is spread by close contact and through traumatic lesions. intact epithelium cannot be penetrated by anti pox medications. it is important to quarantine infected birds to prevent further spread of the virus. pox virus are self terminating virus usually lasting up to 30 days and there are no known anti pox medicines that is 100% effective.

CLINICAL FORMS OF POX VIRUS

CUTANEOUS FORM: this is the most common form of pox virus. it consists of papules in the periophthalmic skin area, beak and legs. yellowish in the beginning then darkens into a dark brown and since this form is self terminating, it disappears without scars.

DIPHTHERITIC FORM: This form of pox virus is the most fatal. it nay coat the oral mucosa, tongue, pharynx and larynx with fibrous exudate and is grayish brown pseudo-membrane that can cause bleeding when removed. main cause of death in this form of pox virus is the obstruction of the trachea. similar to other forms of pox virus this kind of pox virus has no specific treatment and requires specific measures to avoid widespread contamination.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Coryza in agapornis can also be caused by pox virus together with secondary bacterial infections and conjunctivitis.

SPECIFIC MEASURE TO AVOID WIDESPREAD CONTAMINATION:

> isolate bird in clean cage and away from the flock
> disinfect sorrounding using isoprenosine base disinfectant.
> offer vitamin C and A not just to infected birds but for the whole flock
> offer anti-biotics in case of severe infections.
> tincture of iodine may be applied to affected areas but it is important to remove the grayish brown pseudomembrane when applying.

PARASITES IN AGAPORNIS

Most common parasites in agapornis are lice, mites and fleas usually are microscopic and can be treated with much ease. It can be cured by spraying or bathing infected birds with pesticides. IVERMECTIN can also be given... 0.02mg/kg.

INTESTINAL PARASITES:

General symptoms are diarrhea, anorexia and loss of weight.

DRUGS TO TREAT INTESTINAL PARASITES:

METRODINAZOLE: 5mg/kg taken orally every 8 hours
TINIDAZOLE: 5mg/kg taken orally ...single dose
ALBENDAZOLE: 12mg/kg taken orally...single dose
MEBENDAZOLE: 20mg/kg taken orally .. single dose but repeated after 10 days.

ONE EYE COLD AND CORYZA

This is caused by sudden change in temperature especially in aviaries that are exposed to elements. congested aviaries and flight cages are most susceptible to this kind of disease. There are three (3) known strains of virus affecting agapornis; these are the ZEROTYPE A, B and C. The most commonis the ZEROTYPE A and C. this strain can be treated easily compared to ZEROTYPE B. This strain if not treated properly can cause blindness in the affected eye, loss of weight that may lead to bacterial infections of the internal organs. ZEROTYPE B strains is extremely fatal if not detected in its early stage.

Most affected by one eye cold and coryza are the red eye mutations. the use of eye drops and ointments are the most common way of treatment. these are;

> GENTAMYCIN
> TERRAMYCIN
> SYNTAMAX
> TETRACYCLINE
> ERYTHROMYCIN

In very severe cases oral anti-biotics can also be administered.
