A Bored Dog is Not a Happy Dog

Maybe you have heard the old saying about an idle mind. That may have been said to apply to people, but I believe it also applies to dogs.
I see dogs with behavioral problems all the time. The behavior problems can vary from being destructive and chewing on things, to excessive barking and licking on legs or paws. Many of these and other behavioral problems are causing by boredom.
Can you prevent dog boredom? Yes, you can! Here are some tips:
1. Look at your schedule. If you are gone for more than 9 or 10 hours, that is a long boring day for your dog. Consider doggie daycare. Or you can hire a pet sitter or dog walker to come to your home to look after, walk or play with your dog.
2. Consider what toys your dog likes best and make sure you have those toys available for him. It is natural for dogs to get bored with one toy, so make sure your dog has several fun toys to hold his interest.
3. Rotate toys. After you notice your dog is not playing as much with a toy - take it, hide it and introduce something new. Rotate several toys at a time.
4. Give your dog something to do that really holds his interest. Here's a good suggestion - most dogs love to chew on empty water bottles. They love to hear the crunching sound that's made when the bottle bends and cracks.

Whatever you do, spend time with your dog. Don't leave him alone too long. When you are together, be sure to notice any abnormalities in his behavior or appetite, take note and call your veterinarian.
