When I was still starting with the Cocker breed in California (while I was in college), I met some really nice people at the dog shows. When you watch these people at the shows preparing their dogs for the competition, you will notice that they are truly dedicated to their breed!! They present their dogs well and really does a good job at it. Everything about their dogs that day looked perfect. However, It is at their home that you will notice how dedicated these breeders really are. I learned that even before their dogs were conceived, these people already took into consideration how they are going to try to reach their goal and produce their next show dog. They did all the test requirements and has already gone through numerous pedigrees of potential mates for their bitches. They've gone over all the pros and cons and has already established a feel of what the results would be. I admire these breeders who does their homework before they go ahead with the breeding. It is from them that i learned that breeding is not only expensive but also time consuming. Therefore as responsible breeders, we must all plan ahead before actually doing the actual mating. After the breeding, they dedicate their time in the bitches prenatal care. After whelping, they again dedicate a huge amount of time in puppy rearing, conditioning, training and eventually showing. I really admire people who spends so much time on the lives of their beloved breeds. I hope I can say the same with everyone but truly the "dedicated" ones stand out among the rest of us!!! I wish someday, everybody among us fanciers could be called dedicated breeders. One, two or three champions is just the icing of the cake. It's what goes behind the show dogs that is important!!

WELCOME cocker enthusiasts! We've come a long way eversince the breed's popuarity boomed here in the Philippines during the early 90's! Before then, there were also some important imports imported by the Laurels, Carpios, Penafels and the others whom I have forgotten to mention.
During the 90's, Mr. Joseph Ong Chuan and wife Esperanza started introducing the modern type Cockler Spaniels into Philippine soil. With his knowledge in pedigrees and artistic grooming abilities, Mr. Ong was able to put the breed into the dogshow scene and gain popularity. His imports such as Am Ph Gr Champion Riviera's Searidge Hotshot (a Ch. Frandee's Forgery son), Am Ph Gr Ch Snowy River's Acclaim (a Ch. Jazzman Claphand's son), Am Ph Ch Weston's Band of Gold (a Ch Palm Hill's Caro Bu's Solid Gold son), Am Ph Ch Cobb's Lonestar, Am Ph Ch Bleumoon's Hershel P. Jangels, Ph Gr Ch Cobb's Texanna, PS cockers, My Idaho cockers, Cashmere's Cockers, and Mardi Gras cockers have created a very strong foundation here in the Philippines. Up to now, these lines can be found in pedigrees of cockers here and in other asian countries.
A lot of people started their own lines from the beautiful dogs Mr. Ong imported. Ms. Celestina Chua created her Celest Cocker Spaniels by linebreeding on Am Ph Gr Ch Riviera's Searidge Hot Shot (Forgery) dog combining it with Mr. Ong's Cashmere import.. Dr. Baldonado of Baldonado's Cockers infused the Hotshot line's with that of the Palm Hill's to create his beautiful string of buff cockers. Ms. Genie Raymundo created her Rayburg Cocker's bloodlines by combining the Mardi Gras line's with that of Hotshot's! Other people who created their own string of dogs from those of Mr. Ong's are Dr. Willy Sy, Nelson Uy, Arch. Jimmy Lim, Xavier Lance Dy... etcetera.
During the boom of the Cocker breed, some people helped out in promoting and maintaining it's popularity by importing other quality dogs as well. Ms. Celda Cojuanco Teopaco-Santos imported the top winning Am Ph Gr Ch Juban's Jubilant Jazz (a Ch Juban's Georgia Jazz son) who went on win numerous Best in Shows and Best in Specialty Shows. He sired numerous Philippine Champions as well and became the foundation for most Parti Color kennels here in the philippines. Mr. Motoei Furukawa imported Am Ph Gr Ch Overoak's Silverhall Signal (a Ch Silverhall Soldier of Fortune son), Am Ph Hof Ch Searidge See You At Davis (a Ch.Lydgate Lawbreaker son), Am Ph Hof Ch Lacie's Black out, and his latest top winner Am Ph Hof Ch Darkehaven's American Idol. These dogs became the foundations for his Clerwood Cockers. Laura "Nannette" de Guzman imported the beautiful Am Ph Gr Ch Denali's Wild at Heart, Ch Snowy River's Im so Precious bitch and from the very famous Cashmere kennels she imported Am Ph Gr Ch Cashmere's Cartel (a Ch. Baliwick Blackmale son). Ms. Coty Otsuka imported Am Ph Gr Ch Derano's Alabamma Slammer as her foundation bitch, Am Ph Gr Ch Kamp's Snow Cap and Am Ph Gr Ch Nosowea's Home Game to complete her foundations for her parti breeding program. Mr. Rossano Osi imported Am Ph Gr Ch Crazy Q's dance with Darkehaven who became a top winner and top producer in Ascobs and Am Ph Gr Ch Krismyth's Tarnish Sterling. Ms. Bianca Aranet of Enara Cockers imported Homestead lines, Mrs. Fe de la Rosa imported and concentrated in the famous Cindee's Cockers, Patrick Go of King Philip Cockers imported Am Ph Gr Ch Jem's Platinum Gold (a Ch PS Reach for the Gold son), Ph Hof Calfrance's up's D'ante, Ph Hof Endles Luv's Braveheart (a Ch Forjay's Soul sensation son), Am Ph Ch Endles Luv's Dakota Warrior (a Ch. Lamar's Montana son), Ph Gr Ch Hi-Acres n Westglen Blak-Smith (a Ch Wetsglen's Sir Charles son), Hof Ch Westglen's Blak-Jak, Gr Ch Kasino's Halloween Prankster (a Ch Valhalla's Irish Creme son), Ph Ch Brookwood's Decaffeinated (a Ch Brookwood's Battle Plan son), Ch. Tripod's Mt. Rushmore (a Ch. Gazon What a Rush son) and later on was able to purchase Hof Ch April's Coty's Advantage from Coty's Cockers. These and some other imports not mentioned, combined with a Ch. Bleumoon's Just one Time daughter, Cashel's Once in a Bleumoon, became the foundation for the cockers of King Philip. The famous Ms. Junko Murphy imported beautiful dogs such as Am Hof Ch Calfrance's Boy George (a Ch. Far Ace Pretty Boy Floyd son), Hof Ch Crestail's Right on Target, Hof Ch Tell Tail's None the Les (a Ch Tell Tail's Les Brown son), and Hof Ch Mountview's Cristopher Colombus (a Ch Denali's Christopher Robin son) and created her Mutrphy's Cockers now actively being shown in the Metro Manila show circuits.
And now, with the combination of such great cockers brought into Philippine shores, the breed has never been in a better state. Though most breeders are retired by now with only a couple of us still actively showing and promoting the breed, the Cocker Spaniel breed is still going strong and maintaining it's popularity and followings from the whole Philippines.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT STRUCTURE FOR COCKER SPANIELS?

In the length of time that I've been into Cockers Spaniels, I've been ask numerous times one question. What is the correct Coat Texture for Cocker Spaniels?

When I was still new in this breed a decade or so back, I myself asked people this question. I often wondered why there were several (three to be exact..) types of coat textures in this breed. There's the frizzy, curly, afro type of coat, the silky type coat and the slightly wavy textured coat. I, just like all newcomers to the breed, look in awe at the sight of a magnificently coated dog that always wins and wonder how come my dog back home then didn't have that much coat? What is the right coat texture for our breed?

If you've read the breed standard for Cocker Spaniels, it says there that the coat must be silky to slightly wavy for our breed. It didn't say in our breed standard that they're suppossed to have a huge amount of coat. When you ask around with breeders, they'll simply say that just an adequate amount of silky to slightly wavy coat would be just right. But seeing the full coated beauties in the rings will send you over the edge in awe, otherwise.

I believe that the correct texture is just that...what was said in the standard. The reason for prefering to have silky to slightly wavy coat in Cockers is because these dogs have a certain task to fullfill in the field. A tremendous amount of coat would mean that the dog wouldn't be able to fullfill it's duties in the field when put into it's task. Can you imagine a dog with afro-like, full show coat running in the fields, docking into the bushes and jumping into the river to retrieve your hunted down woodcocks? For one, the landscape would act like sandpaper to it's coat! Burrs and prickly seeds from the bushes will get entraped into the coat causing severe matts to form or worst slicing the coat's length each time it brushes against foreign things! Diving into the river with that amount of coat would mean an instant death for our beloved Cocker Spaniel, as the coat will absorb tremendous amount of water, causing the dog to carry much weight and drown.

So, if the standard states that our breed's coat MUST be silky to slightly wavy, why are most of the Winning Cockers in the ring appear to carry more coat than is stated for our breed?

This is simply what previous, old time breeders and show enthusiast have decided to incorporate into our breed through breeding. It is also a fad which has made our Merry little Sporting dog more appealing for the show rings. The tremendous amount of coat our breed now carries does do a marvelous job in making them more appealing to the judges eyes, alright. That's how our breed obtained the description of being "stunning" to everyone's eyes!

I once had a show dog named GR CH KING PHILIP'S BLAK-TIE AFFAIR aka TY who hated the rings very much. He wouldn't move nicely in the rings as compared to how he does at home. Structurally he was flawless but his temperament towards the show rings and the show procedure just didn't do him any justice. So, My bestfriend Ardy and I were in total misery upon realizing that this dog just hated the show rings. Knowing that TY had extremely thick (afro-like) coat, we decided to show him in his coat's full glory, growing it floor length just like what he does with his Shih Tzus. Surprisingly, a handful of judges thought that TY (with his new do) was the most stunning thing in the rings (even if he wouldn't move for them). He easily got his GRAND TITLE without much sweat, literally! However, this is not to say nor justify that a dog's coat will make him win in the rings no matter what. It helped alright, but his career as a show dog is just as long as his coat back then during the time he was being shown.

For some exhibitors, being creative in grooming and styling could make their dogs "correct" textured coats appear more "abundant" than what it really is normally. With the advent of new grooming products (volumizers, etcetera) and with a little magic from grooming, it has been very easy for most of us to do so nowadays. But, at the end of the day, what really counts is that what we breed our dogs to be, coat-wise, must be true to the standard over everything else, fad or no fad!

I believe that whatever era it is when an exibitor starts to breed and show cockers, one must adhere to what the breed standard states. There is a perfectly good reason why they stated that our breed MUST carry a silky to slightly wavy type of coat. Every breed was bred to be able to carry and perform a task and it's coat must not be a hindrance for it to perform this task no matter what. Therefore, after all said and done, What is the correct coat texture for our Cockers for you?
