Tired of backbreaking doggy baths? We have the solution!
You can turn your worst dog-bathing nightmare into a dream come true in 2 easy steps. First, you need to understand how to get your dog to cooperate. Then, you can simplify the process with a routine that makes washing him quick and easy.
OK, let"s start with the first step. I"m going to tell you how to get your dog to cooperate when it's bath time. Which of these behaviors apply to your dog?
Does he run away when it's time to get cleaned?
Teaching your dog to come to you when you call him is one of the most basic yet important commands ... especially when it's bath time. If you're having a hard time getting your dog to come to you willingly at bath time, start by training him on this basic command outside of bath time. Start working indoors with your dog on a leash. When he's not paying attention to you, call his name and then say, "Come!" clearly and enthusiastically. Make movements like tapping your feet and stepping backwards. When he comes, praise him greatly. Try doing this about 5 or 6 times and then gradually remove the leash. Then, gradually move this activity to bath time. Let your dog become comfortable with standing in the dry bathing area (or tub), then slowly introduce the water.
Does he cry while you bathe him?
Try making the bathing area more comfortable and familiar to him by incorporating a toy and other familiar objects that he knows. Start with very quick bathing sessions and gradually prolong them over time if necessary. Continue to praise any progress he makes.
Is your dog a busybody, moving and shaking about while you bathe him?
Try calming, massaging and soothing your dog before you start running the water. Then, hold him gently but firmly and make sure that the bathing surface is not slippery. Keep soothing and talking to your dog throughout the entire bathing process, letting him know that he is being a good dog. Try to keep bath time as brief as possible. The less time your dog has to cooperate with this process, the better behaved he will be.
